    The text is not a compilation of individual recipes but rather advice on cooking, including comments on American and English attitudes to the art, presented in a chatty style. As Mrs Nitsch explains in the preface, "This is not a cookery book [but] an effort to fill up the gap between you and your household oracle, whether she be one of those exasperating old friends... or the newer and better lights of our own generation.'
    "Culture and cooking; or, art in the kitchen' was reprinted as Part 1 of a new work entitled "Catherine Owen's new cook book' of which DLC holds two editions: New York: Cassell and Co Ltd, [copyright 1885], and another edition, Mount Vernon, New York: Household Economics Co, [1900]. "Culture and cooking' is complemented in the new volume by Part 2, "Practical recipes'.
