In the introduction Filippini explains that he took a leave of absence from the International Navigation Company to research the book. He adds, "... a tour of the world was made, and personal visits paid to hotels, restaurants and homes of all countries. Indeed, I have been continually gathering new material and travelling for the past decade." He goes on to describe some of his gastronomic experiences abroad. The text contains menus for breakfast, luncheon and dinner for each day in the year. Recipes follow each menu and there is also a supplementary section, making a total of 3,325 numbered recipes.
