General comments: Most of the editions of this work are not listed here as they were not published in Britain. It was originally written by Surgeon Henry Hurry Goodeve and printed privately in 1844, a second edition following later the same year. The first revised edition was edited by S.C.G. Chuckerbutty, followed by a sixth edition in 1872 revised by Joseph Ewart. The book was rewritten by Birch for the seventh edition, although it was some years before the title was changed to include his name. A third edition of Birch's work was published in Calcutta in 1895, and a fifth in 1913.
