The contents are arranged in twelve chapters, one for each month of the year starting with March. Each chapter begins with a disquisition on the month, followed by a "cook and gardener's calendar', cookery, miscellaneous and medical receipts and a variety of hints on household work and family life. The preface states that "it has been deemed advisable to arrange this work in months commencing with March, the opening of Spring... the contents...have been made appropriate to the particular month under which they appear'. There is a motto at the head of each page, and an analytical index is placed after the main text.
