    The title-page carries the following "extract from the first advertisement to the work': "Whether you wish to model a flower in wax; to ornament a vase by the art of potochemanie; to serve up a relish for breakfast or for supper; to supply a delicious entre#1e for the dinner table; to plan a dinner for a large party or a small one; to cure a headache; to get married; to bury a relative; to establish acquaintances according to the rules of etiquette; to do, make, or to enjoy, provided your desire has relations to the necessities of domestic life, I shall be happy to assist you, and therefore, upon all such occasions, I hope you will not fail to "Enquire within'.
    There is a preface and an index. The contents were first published in twelve unbound numbers. Each page is headed by a different proverb or maxim. The text is arranged in 2,520 numbered paragraphs, approximately one third of which are cookery recipes.

    Although substantially different from earlier editions and with a new arrangement of chapters, this edition still includes some unchanged material from the original work. See, for instance, the rules for card games, instructions on tatting, and the miscellaneous household hints.

    General comments: "Enquire within' was easily the most famous work of its kind, and the title has passed into the English language as a catch-phrase which is still occasionally used. Apart from the evidence of its huge sale, there are references to its popularity in a number of contemporary sources. The music-hall song "Ask a policeman' has the line "In fact each one of them is a complete "Enquire within"', speaking of the ordinary constable. The book features in Sylvia Townsend Warner's novel "Lolly Willowes' and provided the title for a BBC radio series in the early 1980s.
    As the figures climbed towards first a million and then a million and a half copies sold, the publishers' prefaces adopted an increasingly excited tone, with plenty of block capitals and exclamation marks to draw attention to the book's astounding success.
