In the preface, the author expresses his hope that the book will be found useful for prize-givings in elementary schools, mothers' meetings, in free libraries and for distribution by those employers of labour who have at heart the moral and social improvement of their workmen'. From this it appears that he intended the book to be read, but not purchased, by a working-class audience. His advice combines practical with religious and moral elements, and while he admits he is no cook himself a chapter on cookery for "the good-wife' is included.
