The book is written as a narrative, the author using the story of one girl's experiences to explain the duties and discourse on the character of a nursery governess. In spite of the genteel, middle-class image of the governess created by some novels of the period, it is clear that the author of this work saw her intended readers as similar to other young women entering domestic service, and that no great distinction existed between the nursery governess and the nursemaid apart from the ages of the children in their charge.
