Servants defended, by one of their own class.
20.5 x 13.0 cm [1-3] 4-19
This little book is a polemic describing domestic service and the qualities required of servants with the aim of showing that servants are a skilled, industrious and respectable class of workers. The author's objects are stated as "to defend servants from the unjust attacks made upon them, and to show that they are not the despicable individuals they are sometimes represented to be'. Note that the publication date is 1847, the year when the Mayhew brothers' satire on servants, "The greatest plague of life' (q.v.) first appeared. This is probably a serious reply to a deeply resented attack.
