General comments: Robert Abercrombie manufactured two patent medicines, Mr. Abercrombie's Eclectic Solution and his Eclectic Pilules. His book was evidently written with the aim of promoting the sale of his medicines, as they are the cures he most often recommends. In the introduction to the fifth edition, Abercrombie deals with objections from doctors who called his book and treatments "humbug' by accusing them of professional jealousy.
