Louise Creighton originally delivered these lectures during the winter of 1906 to teachers of domestic economy employed by the London County Council. Her stated intention was to sketch the background of social problems, connected with the teaching of domestic economy - "I aimed at showing them "where they came in"' - and to explore the ways in which individual working-class women could be helped to rise above their circumstances.
