The book's origin is explained in the preface: "This little manual has grown out of some manuscript notes employed in instructing a class of girls in the elements of Domestic Economy in a Female School of Industry. Several useful hints have been derived from the excellent treatises of Mr. Tegetmeier, Mrs. Copley, Miss Brewster, and the Finchley Manuals on the same subject ... the form of a Catechism has been adopted as being the most convenient to the professional teacher ...'.
