The title refers to the practice among mistresses of households of giving servants their instructions and ordering household supplies each Monday morning. The mistress was supposed routinely to check her store-room and her accounts, issue cleaning materials and foodstuffs to the servants from her store, decide on the orders for the tradesmen who would be calling and arrange the menus for the week. Young wives who were unused to household administration were likely to see their Monday morning routine as a considerable ordeal, and might simply not know what to tell the servants and tradespeople who expected their orders then. This book offers advice on, among other matters, ordering dinners, managing servants, supervising the store-room and keeping accounts.
