    1. Simon, p. 81, claims 'this was probably the most popular cookery book in England during the last decade of the eighteenth century. There were ten editions published before 1800.' Notwithstanding the 'probably; this is a bold assertion, and the present compiler has found no evidence to justify it. On the contrary, the claim could be made for several other works, especially those of Hannah Glasse and certain of her contemporaries.
