    1. Although printed for the author, it must be presumed that he saw no proofs of the title-page giving his surname as 'Houdlston', which must be a printer's error. The author's surname was, without any doubt, HUDDLESTON; see William McDowall, History of Dumfries (Edinburgh, 1867), p. 598 (footnote), which states: 'Education in other useful occupations was also promoted by the [Dumfries Town] Council. On the 24th of December, 1753, Thomas Huddleston, cook and confectioner, was admitted a freeman and burgess [of Dumfries] on condition that he should teach three poor girls "the arts of cookery and confectionery or paistry [sic]".' George Fraser Black, The Surnames of Scotland: Their Origin, Meaning and History (New York, 1962), p. 3 58, gives only Hiddleston, Hiddlestone, and Huddleston, as variants of a surname which had its 'local origin from Huddleston in the parish of Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire.
