1. The only known reference to this title is given in Scots Mag., vol. 35 (Dec. 1773), p. 654, which also gives the price. In the present compiler's opinion, this was a forward announcement for a book which never appeared under the advertised title. Mrs. Maciver could have been told that her book would achieve very poor sales with a main title which began with such daunting words as 'A new and experimental treatise', when her proposed subject was the homely one of cookery. It is more than probable, therefore, that she simply ordered a new title-page for the same contents, and sold her work as the Ist ed. of 'Cookery and pastry'. In short-this entry is a discarded title for the only book which Mrs Maciver ever wrote, with the price she had already fixed being retained for the 1st ed. of the previous entry, where it is given in square brackets. It is interesting to note that Mrs Maciver retained personal control of the sales of her book for several years.
