    1. The author described himself in the 4th ed. as 'John Nott, late Cook to the Dukes of Somerset, Ormond and Bolton, Lords Lansdown and Ashburnham'. In the introduction he discusses the curious and elaborate practical jokes which were played at banquets in the past.
