    1. For a life of Dr John Trusler see DNB, vol. 19 (1909), pp. 1195-6, where he is described as an 'eccentric divine, literary compiler, and medical empiric'. He was extremely interested in the wages and conditions of servants; see J. Jean Hecht, The Domestic Servant Class in Eighteenth- Century England, op. cit., passim. He was also keen on recording the household customs of his time; hence his work on the 'honours of the table'.
    2. Scots Mag., vol. 51 (Nov. 1789), p. 544, confirms that the price was 2 sh. 6 d.
    3. There were further editions in the 19th century; see BM Cat. (1964).
