    The book was compiled "mainly for housewives of moderate means'. The publisher's advertisements at the back are dated "publishing season, 1885-6`. LB and LoEN date the book [1885]; OB dates its copy, acquired on 6 January 1886, [1886].

    Pages ii-iii of the advertisements at the back of the book are entitled "Toothsome dishes # additional recipes, etc' and comprise recipes using products such as Cadbury's Cocoa and Bird's Custard Powder.
    Printed on the binding is "Third edition. Revised and enlarged. Thirteenth thousand.' This differs from the numbering of "eleventh thousand' on the title-page.
    OB describes its copy as the sixth edition, dated [1899]; however, it is identical to the LCS copy described here.% 0705
