The preface states, "Nearly forty years ago, to fill an obvious want, the late Mr Vine wrote "Saleable shop goods for counter-tray and window".... The [fifth] edition having become exhausted since the Great War, the whole book was rewritten, revised and brought up-to-date with regard to post-war practice and developments, and a large sixth edition was issued.... [The seventh] edition has been still further revised... and a number of new illustrations have been included."
