In the preface Mrs Wicken advises Australians to introduce fish, vegetables and fruit into their menus more often. The first chapter, "Fruit recipes", embraces a wide variety of local fruit such as melons, guavas, figs, passion fruit, loquats, pineapple, peaches, gramma, granadilla, mangoes and Cape gooseberries. Only a few of the book's recipes use meat.
