    The following statistics are printed on the title-page: "The reports of the Registrar General show that the mortality among infants, under one year, averages 151 deaths (from all causes) to every 1000 births registered in England and Wales. Among the large towns in England, Liverpool stands the highest, with an infant mortality of 225, Leicester next with 221, and Portsmouth the lowest with 144 deaths for every 1000 born. The infant mortality in 1878, was greater than the average, due to the prevalence of zymotic diseases, chiefly whooping-cough and diarrhoea." The dedication is dated September 1880 and LB dates the book [1880]. Pages 14-27, entitled "Food for the sick", contain mainly recipes.
