The practice of cookery and pastry

By WILLIAMSON, Mrs I.

  • 1. "The practice of cookery and pastry adapted to the business of every-day life" went through many editions. Although the title never changed, the book was attributed at different times to Mrs I. Williamson, G. Williamson, Mrs J. Williamson, Williamson and Son, and D. Williamson. All are surely members of the same family. Since the first edition of the title appeared earlier than the period covered by this bibliography, I have not catalogued the book fully here; however, a brief publishing history follows.
CBCat 33 records "The practice of cookery and pastry, adapted to the business of every day life, by Mrs I. Williamson, teacher of those arts, 35 Dundas Street, Edinburgh", new edition, greatly enlarged and improved, Edinburgh: 1854.
The first cited edition in EngCat is one published by Constable in 1862 at the price of 3s 6d. EngCat attributes the book to G. Williamson. It does not record the edition number.
LB and OB hold, and NUCat cites, the fifth edition, greatly enlarged and improved, by Mrs J. Williamson, Edinburgh: 1862.
OPo(F) has the sixth edition, by Mrs I. Williamson, Edinburgh: printed by Thomas Constable, 1864.
BP1911 cites the ninth edition, by Williamson and Son, Edinburgh: 1870. Also attributed to Williamson and Son are the tenth edition, Edinburgh: 1871, cited in CBCat 39; the eleventh edition, dated 1872, a copy of which is in a British private collection; the twelfth edition, Edinburgh: J. Menzies and Co, 1874, at KMK; and the thirteenth edition, Edinburgh: J. Menzies and Co, 1875, at OPo(F).
A British private collector owns the fifteenth edition attributed to D. Williamson, Edinburgh: J. Menzies and Co, 1878. All the following editions are also credited to D. Williamson: the sixteenth edition, dated 1879, in a British private collection; another edition, Edinburgh: 1882 ,listed in CBSCat-C22 (this edition, which fits chronologically between the sixteenth and seventeenth editions, is extra to the numbered sequence, raising the possibility of a typographical error in the CBSCat listing); the seventeenth edition, Edinburgh: J. Menzies and Co, 1886, at OPo(F); the eighteenth edition, Edinburgh: J. Menzies and Co, 1887, at LB; another edition, Simpkin, 1889, cited in EngCat; another edition, Edinburgh: 1891, cited in AbCat; the twentieth edition, Edinburgh: A. Elliot, 1895, at LoEN; the twenty-first edition, Edinburgh: Andrew Elliot, 1896, at GrART and OPo(F); and the twenty-second edition, Edinburgh: Andrew Elliot, 1906, at OPo(F).
"Supplement to the practice of cookery and pastry adapted to the business of every-day life" by D. Williamson appeared in 1881. See Williamson, D., for a description of this book.
