    In the preface, which is dated October 1891, Willy begins by saying that he was induced to write the book by the appearance of a volume called "Ornamental confectionery" by Robert Wells of Scarborough. The entire preface is a criticism of that book.

    Unusually, the preliminary pages which are numbered in roman have the odd numbers on the verso and the even numbers on the recto of each leaf.
    In the preface to the second edition Willy comments that Robert Wells, in the face of Willy's criticism of his work, "has considered the most profound silence as the wisest course in his delicate concern"!
