The writer of the prefatory note, Reverend John Gillespie, refers to "the authoress, Mrs Neill Rae". She signs and dates the preface "E. A. Neill Rae. Manse of Lochmaben, May, 1902."
There are 462 numbered recipes. Many of the recipes are credited with the name and address of the contributor and originate not only from Britain but Canada, South Africa, India and the United States.
The book was apparently published as part of the fund-raising efforts of the Lochmaben Parish Church Bazaar. The name of the Bazaar is printed on the binding.
