Mrs Rawnsley explains in the preface that the book is made up of extracts from her grandmother's recipe book handed down in the family for generations. Of the few recipes which are dated, all come from the first half of the nineteenth century except for a cure for a cold which, according to the preface, is the oldest and from the year 1784. LB, LoEN and OB date "An old-world recipe book" [1908].
