In the preface Ellice Hopkins of Percy House, Brighton, refers to the book as "this little manual of simple cooking as taught in a Free Registry Office by one of our Associates". The text contains ten numbered lessons which, according to the preface, were not meant for regular elementary school classes but to be taught on a voluntary basis. LB and OB date the book [1885].
