Libraries and Collections

Abbreviations for the countries of location are as follows:

  • AUSAustralia
  • CANCanada
  • EIREThe Republic of Ireland
  • GBGreat Britain
  • SASouth Africa
  • USUnited States of America

There are no standard abbreviations for British libraries. However, the NUCat abbreviation rules from Symbols for American libraries provide a useful guideline. These rules operate on the principle that each library is identified by groups of letters referring first to the state in which it is located, second to the name of the town, and third to the name of the library itself. The book Symbols of Canadian Libraries (National Library of Canada, 1985), complies abbreviations according to this principle and is the source fro Canadian library abbreviations used in this bibliography.

Using this principle abbreviations for British and other locations have been devised, including those for libraries in the United States not listed in Symbols of American libraries; these library abbreviations are denoted by an asterisk in the following list. For British libraries the first letter of group of letters refers to the County (London is considered a county with the boroughs as towns within it), and for Australian and other libraries to the state or territory; the second letter of group of letters refer to the town; the third letter or group of letters refer to the library. If the library is followed by a letter in brackets, that letter designates a specific library section or collection within the larger unit.

Because there is so much duplication between county names and their main cities these are contracted:

Le = Leicestershire, Leicester
Similarly, many educational establishments and local authority libraries are named after the town or city in which they reside. In these cases the abbreviations are also contracted:
LeU = Leicestershire, Leicester, University of Leicester
MCe = Greater Manchester, Manchester, City of Manchester Central Library
The NUC avoids an initial for the word 'library', and this practice has been retained within theses abbreviations wherever possible. In addition, the following abbreviations for commonly used designations have been drawn up:

  • ATCollege of Arts and Technology
  • ArArchive
  • CaCastle
  • CeCentral Library
  • CiCity Library
  • CoCounty
  • EcCollege of Home Economics
  • FCollege of Further Education
  • HCollege of Higher Education
